Aden (Reuters) - A report issued by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on Sunday revealed a significant increase in the number of illegal immigrants arriving in Yemen from Africa during the first seven months of this year, despite the worsening conditions in the country wracked by the eight-year war. The Office of the United Nations in Yemen said in its monthly report to track the flow of migrants that 34,437 migrants entered Yemen during the period from January to July 2022, compared to 11,555 migrants who arrived on Yemeni shores during the same period in 2021. The organization said 3,171 African migrants arrived in Yemen in July, down from 3,174 the previous month. "93 percent of these migrants came from Ethiopia, while the rest came from Somalia," the report added. The International Organization for Migration says that despite the continuing bloody conflict in Yemen, the country remains a transit point for African migrants to Saudi Arabia in search of a better life. For years, African migrants have viewed Yemen as a transit station on a perilous journey to the Gulf countries, especially Saudi Arabia, which has a long land border with Yemen, in search of improving their living conditions.
