Italy's Democratic Party concedes defeat in general elections

Italy's centre-left Democratic Party conceded early Monday its defeat in the general election, vowing to be the biggest opposition force in the next parliament.
"This is a sad evening for the country. It (the right) has a majority in parliament but not in the country," Deborah Seracciani, a prominent Democrat in the Democratic Party, told reporters in the party's first official comment on the outcome.
According to the results of a poll of the opinions of voters as they exited the polling stations, a right-wing alliance led by the "Brothers of Italy" party won a clear majority in the general elections, in the first of its kind since the end of World War II.

The poll, conducted by state TV station Rai, showed that the conservative party bloc - which includes the "Brothers of Italy" party led by Giorgia Meloni, the League party led by Matteo Salvini, and the "Forza Italia" party led by Silvio Berlusconi - won by 41%. and 45%, which is enough to ensure control of both houses of Parliament.

Full results are expected in the early hours of Monday morning.

For its part, the Italian Democratic Party conceded defeat in the elections, and said that it would become the largest opposition bloc in Parliament.

Meloni announced that she would lead the next government, and added in a speech to her supporters that her party would rule in the interest of all Italians in the event that it was tasked with forming a government.

She also said that the situation in the country is difficult and needs everyone's help, as she put it
