Batili begins his mission as the new representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya announced that the Senegalese diplomat, Abdallah Batele, officially began his duties on Sunday, September 25, as the new Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the Organization, Antonio Guterres.
The mission added, in a statement, that Batelli will serve from Libya, with the support of Rizdon Zeninga as Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Political Affairs, and Georgette Gagnon as Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Resident Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs.

She explained that Batelli will start a series of meetings with senior United Nations officials and representatives of member states in New York, before arriving in Libya early next October.

Libya's representative to the United Nations, Taher Al-Sunni, expressed, through his account on "Twitter", his happiness to meet Batili and his welcome to start his mission.

He praised Batili being the first African envoy to Libya, in addition to his keenness to make his first official meetings with the Libyan mission in New York.

And at the beginning of this September, the United Nations announced the selection of Batili as a special representative of the Secretary-General in Libya and head of the UN mission there, to succeed the Slovakian Jan Kubis.

Since last March, Libya has witnessed a conflict between two governments, one headed by Fathi Bashagha and assigned by the House of Representatives in Tobruk, and the other is the National Unity Government headed by Abdel Hamid al-Dabaiba, who refuses to hand over power except to a government assigned by a new elected parliament.
