Brussels: Europe and the Arabs
The European Commission announced funding of €193 million for the most vulnerable groups in Yemen. Years of violence, displacement, and the economic and political crisis have led to great devastation in Yemen. The funding, announced by Commissioner Janiz Lenarcic during the Riyadh International Humanitarian Forum, will provide life-saving assistance to the most vulnerable.
According to a European statement published by the EU Delegation to Yemen, "€136 million of this funding will be allocated to EU humanitarian partners such as the United Nations and NGOs to help meet needs arising from ongoing violence and sudden-onset disasters. Activities funded by the EU include health, nutrition and aid food, as well as water and sanitation to prevent malnutrition and the transmission of epidemics.
€55 million in development assistance is earmarked to support food security and livelihoods to address immediate food security needs, as well as long-term development and self-reliance. This portion of the funding aims to help Yemenis earn a living and produce food locally as part of the transition to a sustainable and resilient food system.
During Commissioner Lenarchic's visit to Riyadh, he will deliver an opening speech at the Riyadh International Humanitarian Forum. He also discussed the most pressing humanitarian issues with His Highness Prince Faisal bin Farhan, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and His Excellency Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, General Supervisor of the King Salman Center for Humanitarian Aid and Relief, and His Excellency Dr. Jassim Al-Budaiwi, Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, and Diana Janes, Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation.
