Brussels: Europe and the Arabs
A statement issued in Brussels on Sunday by the European Union's foreign policy spokesperson expressed deep sadness over the death of Basma Kodmani a few days ago. "She was a central figure in the Syrian opposition, and she was a strong and permanent advocate for the role of women in the future Syria," the statement said.=
It is tragic that her vision - which the European Union shares - of a free and democratic Syria has not been realized.
The European Union expresses its condolences to Ms. Kodmani's family and many close to her, and pays tribute to her efforts and legacy.
In this context, the European Union will continue its engagement to work towards a sustainable solution to the Syrian conflict through a genuine and inclusive political transition in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
The prominent Syrian oppositionist, Basma Qadmani, died at the age of 65 in the French capital, Thursday, after a struggle with cancer that lasted for years, according to her sister, Agence France-Presse.
Journalist for the French newspaper Liberation, Hala Kodmani, said that her sister died in a hospital in Paris after a struggle with illness.
Wadmani, a researcher and professor of international relations at the University of Paris, has been one of the most prominent figures in the opposition since the outbreak of the conflict, which began in mid-March 2011 with peaceful protests against the regime, which quickly turned into a devastating conflict after being suppressed by force.
In August of the same year, she participated in the establishment of the opposition Syrian National Council, and then joined the ranks of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, the most prominent opposition formations abroad. She was repeatedly among the negotiating delegation that participated in indirect talks with representatives of the Syrian government under the supervision of the United Nations in Geneva. I set off in Geneva in 2019 for talks on the Syrian constitution.
Qadamani was known for her calmness, diplomacy, and struggle for freedom and democracy. During the years of conflict and her involvement in the political opposition, she was a permanent guest in foreign media reports, especially the French-language ones. She participated in seminars and lectures organized by Arab and foreign academic institutions and political forums.
