On Friday, the European Union called on the international community to redouble its efforts to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis, stressing continued support for the United Nations-led process to achieve this goal.

"We still believe in the need for the international community to redouble its efforts to reach a comprehensive and lasting political solution in Syria in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions," Peter Stano, European Union spokesman for foreign affairs and security policy, said at a press conference.

Stano stressed the importance of committing to achieving this goal and continuing to support all political processes led by the United Nations in this regard, with full respect for Syria's unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, indicating that focusing on those criteria is the basis for discussing issues related to Syria.

He pointed out that the European Union is still firmly attached to the possibility of reaching a political process led by the United Nations in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2254.

He pointed out that the foreign ministers of the Group of Seven major industrialized countries and the European Union stressed during their recent meeting in Japan the need for the international community to continue supporting the efforts of the United Nations Special Envoy, Geir Pedersen, who deals with all issues related to developments in Syria.

Stano added, "For us, it is important that the solution be Syria and under the auspices of the United Nations."
