Italian Luigi Di Maio is a special envoy of the European Union to the Gulf region.

It was announced in Brussels on Monday that the Italian Luigi Di Maio had been appointed as the European Union's envoy to the Gulf region. According to a European statement, the tasks of the new European Union special envoy will be to develop the European Union's strongest, comprehensive and most strategic partnership with the countries of the Gulf region by supporting High Representative Josep Borrell in implementing the policy. Foreign and security aspects of the EU's joint communication on a strategic partnership with the Gulf region on 18 May 2022 and the relevant conclusions of the Council on 20 June 2022.
It will seek the best ways to contribute to the stability and security of the region by engaging and supporting dialogue and long-term regional solutions with individual Gulf partners and relevant regional organizations. It will support and cooperate similarly with the Council and the European Commission to help ensure coherence of the EU's external action in the region, and to contribute to greater clarity and understanding of the EU's role.
Mr. Di Maio will take office on June 1 with an initial term of 21 months.
Mr. Di Maio served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy from 2019 to 2022. He previously held the positions of Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Minister of Labor and Social Policies, Vice-President of the Chamber of Deputies and Member of the Committee on European Union Affairs in the 17th Italian Legislature.
EU Special Representatives are proposed by the High Representative to promote EU policies and interests in specific regions and countries, and to provide the EU with an active political presence in those regions.

Mr. Luigi Di Maio held the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs of the
Italy from September 2019 to October 2022.
In 2022 he is the chairman of the board
European Parliamentary Assembly.
From June 2018 to September 2019 he held positions
Italian Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economy, Development and Trade, Minister of Labor and Social Affairs
From March 2013 to March 2018 he was Vice President
Chamber of Deputies and member of the Commission on European Union Affairs in the 17th Italian
Legislature. During his tenure as Minister of Foreign Affairs, he chaired, among others, the G20 Foreign Affairs Ministers Meeting, the G20 Trade Ministers Meeting, the G20 Ministers Meeting and the Meeting on Afghanistan, the June 2021 General Ministerial Meeting of the Global Coalition Against Daesh and the first Ministerial Mediterranean Dialogue on the food security crisis in June 2022. He was chair of three annual editions (2019, 2020, 2021) of the MED Dialogue.
