Brussels: Europe and the Arabs
The European Union called for addressing the shortcomings of the recent elections in Turkey, and said that it must be transparent and credible. This came in a joint statement issued by the High Coordinator for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, and Commissioner for Enlargement Affairs, Oliver Varheli.
According to the statement published in Brussels, the European Union welcomed the parliamentary and presidential elections that took place in Turkey on Sunday, May 14, and the high turnout as a clear sign of the Turkish people's commitment to exercising their democratic right to vote.
"We note the preliminary findings and conclusions of the International Election Observation Mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and the Council of Europe, and we call on the Turkish authorities to address the shortcomings that have been identified," the statement said.
The European Union attaches the utmost importance to the need for transparent, inclusive and credible elections, on a level playing field. The European Union looks forward to the next Parliament taking over its duties.
