The mayor of Miami announced his candidacy in the 2024 US presidential race, joining a crowded race of Republican candidates, all of whom are still being led by former President Donald Trump.
The New York Times said that Francis Suarez, who served as Mayor of Miami for two terms, announced his official entry into the race Thursday, and presents himself as a new face in the Republican Party, at the age of 45 in a race led by the seventieth Trump, and Suarez is an American of Cuban origin in the party of most of his officials. elected from the whites. According to what was reported by the site of the seventh day in Cairo
In a speech at the Reagan Library in California on Thursday night, Suarez announced his candidacy, saying he believes America remains a shining city on a hill to which the eyes of the world turn, and its promise must be restored.
He continued, saying: I think that the city needs more than one fighter or gunman, it needs a servant and a mayor. My name is Francis Suarez, and I'm here to help.
Suarez was elected mayor of Miami in 2017 with 86% of the vote, and was re-elected in 2021 with 79% of the vote, which is a huge difference achieved thanks to almost no opposition, as the Miami mayoral election is officially non-partisan.
Suarez will rely in his candidacy to a large extent on his experience as mayor, since the only electoral position he held was in the city committee, a job that is not a starting point for launching a presidential campaign. But the position of mayor of Miami is also largely sham and part-time.
Suarez's main powers are centered on vetoing legislation and appointing or dismissing a city manager. He does not have a vote on the city committee. Shortly after his election, Suarez sought to grant himself more powers, including over the budget and the workforce, but voters rejected his proposal.
