The United Nations announced that it is intensifying its efforts to respond to the increasing numbers of people fleeing the fighting in Sudan to neighboring countries. According to the United Nations news bulletin, a copy of which we received this morning.
UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq said the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs on Thursday allocated $8 million from the South Sudan Humanitarian Fund to help refugees and returnees from Sudan seeking shelter in South Sudan.

Haq said at the daily press conference that these funds will help organizations on the ground provide food, water, shelter and medical care to those affected by the ongoing violence.

The UN Deputy Spokesperson reported that about 150,000 people have arrived in South Sudan since the fighting began in Sudan on April 15, and this number is expected to increase as the crisis continues.

More than 60,000 people crossed into Ethiopia
Also this week, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Martin Griffiths, allocated $5 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund to support new arrivals in Ethiopia.

This amount will help meet the needs of about 100,000 people for six months.

Haq said that humanitarian partners provide water, health, protection and other basic services, noting that more than 60,000 people have crossed the border into Ethiopia since the beginning of the crisis in Sudan.

Overall, the Central Emergency Response Fund has committed a total amount of $76 million to the Sudan crisis with the aim of supporting the response inside the country as well as in Chad, Central African Republic, Egypt, Ethiopia and South Sudan.

The Sudan Humanitarian Fund has also allocated $40 million for relief efforts inside Sudan.
