Shortly after the Swedish government condemned the attack on its embassy in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, the Iraqi government confirmed that it had informed the Swedish government yesterday, through diplomatic channels, to go to sever diplomatic relations with Sweden in the event of a repeat of the incident of burning the Qur’an on its soil, and to grant approvals under the pretext of freedom. expression, and emphasized that such provocative actions offend international covenants and norms with respect to religions and beliefs, constitute a threat to peace, and incite a culture of violence and hatred.
The Iraqi Prime Minister, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Muhammad Shia’ al-Sudani, chaired this morning, Thursday, an emergency meeting that included the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Interior, the Head of the National Security Service and the Undersecretary of the National Intelligence Service, the Chief of Staff of the Army and the Deputy Commander of Joint Operations, against the backdrop of granting the Swedish government a license To burn the Holy Qur’an, and the incident of burning the Swedish embassy in Baghdad.
The meeting condemned the burning of the Swedish embassy in Baghdad, and considered it a security breach that must be dealt with immediately, and those responsible for security should be held accountable.
During the emergency meeting, it was decided to refer those responsible for the embassy burning, who were arrested, to the judiciary, as well as to refer the negligent security officials to investigation, and to take legal measures against them, and in this regard, the Iraqi government renews its assurances of commitment to the security and protection of all diplomatic missions, and to address any attack targeting them.
Iraq condemns the continuation of the Swedish authorities in such provocative positions to the beliefs and sanctities of others.
Sweden condemned the storming of its embassy in Baghdad today, Thursday, blaming the Iraqi authorities for protecting diplomatic missions.
"We condemn all attacks on diplomats and staff of international organizations," the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, in a statement reported by the Iraqi Alsumaria News channel, adding that the Iraqi authorities bear the responsibility to protect diplomatic missions and their staff.
It is noteworthy that demonstrators stormed the Swedish embassy in Baghdad, at dawn today, before it was burned, in protest against the approval of the Swedish government for a demonstration to burn a copy of the Holy Quran, while the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the burning of the embassy building.
