15 killed in 16 Algerian states due to forest fires

Forest fires in Algeria, on Monday, killed 15 people, while 26 were injured in 16 provinces, according to the Algerian Ministry of Interior.

The ministry said, in a press statement, that the states of "Bejaia", "Bouira" and "Jijel" recorded the largest fires, due to the winds.

She pointed out that 1,500 people were evacuated, especially in the municipality of "Fanaya" in the Al-Qasr district, and the municipality of "Zubarbar" in the Al-Akhdaria district.

In another context, the International Committee of the Red Cross said that the heat wave sweeping most parts of the northern hemisphere led to the outbreak of forest fires, which could bring with it unknown risks, but "may be fatal."
The committee stated - in a statement today, Monday, that these risks include explosions resulting from unexploded ordnance lurking in forest floors or in abandoned ammunition stores in particular, which can be left over from armed conflicts or previous training, warning that the explosion of these weapons can lead to additional risks, especially for firefighters.

The committee added that the danger does not stop there, but in some cases, as is the case with white phosphorus ammunition and propellant, the intense heat on its own can cause some weapons to self-ignite and burn, leading to dangerous explosions and possibly causing forest fires.
