Brussels-Stockholm: Europe and the Arabs
Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reported that the Swedish police had received at least three requests to hold public gatherings in Stockholm over the next three weeks with the intention of burning copies of the Holy Quran.
One of the requests is to burn a Quran in front of the Iranian embassy on August 3. The newspaper wrote, quoting the Swedish daily newspaper Svenska Dagbladet, that the other applications relate to the burning of the Qur’ans on August 10 in the town of Norsborg, south of Stockholm County, and in the city of Stockholm itself. According to what was reported by Belgian media in Brussels on Monday morning
A man also plans to burn a book of Christian hymns outside the church. The aim, wrote the Swedish news agency TT, was to stem the escalation of "the burning of the Qur'an that has put all Swedes and the Swedish government in such a difficult position in the Muslim world".
The Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Christson had earlier expressed his deep concern. Kristerson fears something bad will happen if the protests continue, he told TT. "I am very worried about what that could lead to."
In many countries of the Middle East, there were already violent protests against Sweden and the burning of the Koran. The diplomatic relations between Stockholm also suffer from these practices.
