European condemnation of the Turkish Cypriot attack on the United Nations peacekeeping force

The European Union condemned the attack by members of the Turkish Cypriot side on Friday morning against the United Nations peacekeeping forces in Cyprus. "We call on the Turkish Cypriot side to fully respect the authority of the mission entrusted within the United Nations buffer zone," said a statement issued by the office of Josep Borrell, Coordinator of EU Foreign Policy in Brussels “The recent unilateral steps regarding unauthorized construction work by the Turkish Cypriot side inside the UN buffer zone near Pyla/Pile, is a violation of the status quo that leads to an escalation.
The EU called for calm and stability in the region, as well as for the resumption of important work on a mutually acceptable way forward in the Bella/Baile region.
With reference to the European Council conclusions of June 2023, the European Union remains fully committed to reaching a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem, within the framework of the United Nations, in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and in line with the principles on which the European Union was founded and the Acquisitions.
For such a settlement to be possible in the future, also in line with the press release of the United Nations Security Council of July 12, 2023, it remains necessary to avoid unilateral measures, including those that violate the military status quo along the ceasefire lines or Trespassing the buffer zone.
