Morocco: The death toll from the earthquake has reached nearly 9,000 people, including dead and injured, and the United Nations continues to coordinate with the authorities

Citing Moroccan authorities, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that the death toll from the earthquake in Morocco had risen to nearly 3,000 dead and more than 5,500 injured.
The UN office stated that most of the deaths and injuries occurred in Al Haouz (the epicenter) and Taroudant governorates. The number of victims is expected to rise as search and rescue operations continue. The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs explained that the Moroccan authorities are leading the response, and have mobilized enormous efforts, including medical personnel and medical equipment.
Thousands of people are living out in the open, with electricity, internet and roads cut off in some places, OCHA said. According to the Ministry of Education, 530 schools and 55 boarding schools were damaged, most of them in the Chichaoua and Taroudant regions.

Initial reports indicate that nearly 100,000 children were affected by the strong earthquake.
United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in the daily press conference that UNICEF mobilized humanitarian workers to support immediate response efforts on the ground.
He added that UNICEF is working in close coordination with the authorities and UN partners, and stands ready to provide further support to the humanitarian response as necessary to reach affected children and families with necessary supplies and support.
