New York: Europe and the Arabs
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said that it witnessed, yesterday, Sunday, an intense exchange of fire in several areas along the Blue Line between Lebanese territory and Israel.
UNIFIL indicated, in a press statement, that shells fell on both sides of the Blue Line. It said that its general headquarters in Naqoura was hit by a missile and that it was working to verify its source.
The statement stated that UNIFIL peacekeepers were not in the shelters at the time, and fortunately, no one was hurt.
The mission said it continues to work actively with the authorities on both sides of the Blue Line to calm the situation. She added: "But unfortunately, despite our efforts, the military escalation continues."
UNIFIL urged all parties concerned to cease fire and allow peacekeepers to help find solutions, adding, "No one wants to see more people injured or killed."
UNIFIL reminded all parties concerned that attacks against civilians or United Nations personnel are violations of international law that may amount to war crimes.
