Brussels: Europe and the Arabs
Today, Thursday, at 10 a.m. Brussels time, a special summit of the European Council will be held, which includes the leaders of the member states of the Union, “to continue discussions on some of the most pressing issues affecting us.” According to Charles Michel Reis, the European Union called on member state leaders to meet and added: “First and foremost, agreement on the medium-term review of our multiannual financial framework. At our last meeting in December, 26 leaders strongly supported a balanced negotiating fund that takes into account A clear set of key priorities – supporting Ukraine, managing migration and its external dimension, supporting the Western Balkans and our response to natural disasters. This negotiating fund paves the way for the agreement to be finalized on September 27th. Securing the agreement is critical to our credibility – and especially to our commitment to providing Unwavering support for Ukraine The responsibility lies squarely with us to find and implement a solution.
Given these circumstances, we will also take this opportunity to urgently address all aspects of our military assistance to Ukraine. This includes delivering ammunition, in line with the European Council conclusions we reached in March 2023, and adjusting relevant EU instruments to deliver aid more quickly, complementing bilateral efforts. To achieve this, we must continue our donations, adapt orders and place new orders – which will also strengthen our European defense industry.
The dramatic events taking place in the Middle East require our utmost focus. All hostages held by Hamas must be released without any preconditions. Our discussion should revolve around a number of key issues. In light of troubling regional developments, we need to address security issues, continue to encourage restraint and discuss measures to prevent further regional escalation, especially in the Red Sea. In addition, we must urgently contribute to addressing the devastating humanitarian situation in Gaza. Finally, we must discuss how to revive the political process in order to reach a two-state solution – the only viable option that can achieve sustainable peace for both Israelis and Palestinians and enhance regional security. Overall, our efforts must aim to ensure that international law and international humanitarian law are respected by all.
