New York - Sanaa: Europe and the Arabs
The United Nations and its partners reviewed the humanitarian needs in Yemen for the current year and the response plan to reach millions with life-saving assistance and protection. Given the dire needs, relief officials have appealed for urgent support to more than 18.2 million people. According to what was stated in the United Nations daily news bulletin, a copy of which we received on Friday morning
Peter Hawkins, the United Nations Resident Coordinator and Acting Humanitarian Coordinator, said that civilians in Yemen have been facing enormous suffering for more than 9 years due to conflict, deterioration of the economy, infrastructure and public services, as well as climate change.
Implementing the humanitarian response plan for Yemen during the current year requires $2.7 billion to achieve what was described as an enhanced and targeted approach to humanitarian programs. Hawkins added that Yemen is facing a critical juncture and that it has a unique opportunity to take a decisive step away from the humanitarian crisis by addressing the drivers of the crisis.
While he pointed to the additional risks resulting from the dynamics of the regional conflict, the UN official stressed that the humanitarian community is committed to survival and providing services. Hawkins urged donors not to abandon the Yemeni people and appealed to them to continue providing urgent support to save lives, build resilience and fund sustainable interventions.
After more than 9 years of conflict, 18.2 million people in Yemen still need support, and estimates indicate that 17.6 million people will face food insecurity during 2024.
