The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, expressed his solidarity with the people of Gaza, in a message he addressed to the world as Muslims around the world began celebrating the holy month of Ramadan, which embodies the values of peace, tolerance and generosity. It is a time for reflection and supplication and an opportunity for convergence and support.
According to the United Nations Information Center, Guterres said: “Unfortunately, many will celebrate this month while suffering the scourges of conflict, displacement and fear,” adding: “My entire heart and conscience are with them – from the people of Afghanistan to the Sahel region, and from the Horn of Africa to Syria.”
He continued: “The spirit of Ramadan, in these difficult times, is a beacon of hope and a reminder of our common humanity,” calling for “this spirit to be a source of inspiration for all to heal divisions, support those in need, and work as one entity for the safety and dignity of every member of the human family.” He hopes that “this holy month will bring peace and guide us towards a more just and merciful world.” According to what was reported by the Youm 7 website in Cairo from the Middle East News Agency on Monday morning
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, denounced the death of more than 100 Palestinian citizens during the delivery of relief aid in northern Gaza, referring to the massacre committed by the Israeli occupation forces on “Al-Rashid Street” in Gaza City.
His spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, said in a statement that the incident took place in “horrific conditions,” explaining that United Nations crews were not present during the distribution of this aid.
"Desperate civilians in Gaza need urgent assistance, including those trapped in the north where the United Nations has been unable to provide aid for more than a week," Dujarric noted, reiterating Guterres' call for an immediate ceasefire.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations expressed his horror at the tragic human losses resulting from the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, which has so far left more than 30,000 martyrs and 70,000 wounded, adding, "It is unfortunate that an unknown number of people are still under the rubble."
This comes after the World Health Organization and its partners completed a mission to Al-Ahli Hospital and Al-Sahaba Hospital, north of Gaza, which are operating with limited capacity in light of the shortage of food, fuel, specialists, necessary supplies, and medicines, including anesthesia.
Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the organization, said that the team delivered supplies for orthopedic and trauma surgery sufficient for 150 patients, 13,000 liters of fuel to Al-Ahli Hospital, and 12,000 liters to Al-Sahaba Hospital.
He stressed the need to ensure regular, sustainable and safe access to health facilities to provide them with much-needed life-saving supplies. He renewed the call for a ceasefire.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) renewed its warning of the spread of hunger everywhere in the Gaza Strip. She said that the situation in the north is tragic, as "aid is prevented from arriving by land despite repeated calls, with the start of the holy month of Ramadan."
The agency said that this situation would increase the number of deaths. She stressed that ensuring humanitarian access throughout the Gaza Strip and an immediate humanitarian ceasefire are imperative to save lives.
