Brussels: Europe and the Arabs
Today, the meetings of the foreign ministers of the European Union countries are being held in Brussels, and the situation in the Middle East will be the most prominent topic on the discussion agenda. It was also the focus of discussions that took place yesterday, Sunday. European Foreign Policy Coordinator Josep Borrell said afterward, “Sunday” was the first day of two days of intense participation on the East. The Middle East between the European Union and its member states - thanks to Norway for inviting this meeting - and our Arab friends. On Monday, we will continue to work in the Foreign Affairs Council.
Everything has been said. Let me just insist on a basic idea: the two-state solution is not a painful concession made by Israel. It does not pose a security threat to Israel. On the contrary, it is the only long-term guarantee of Israel's security and prosperity. I know that the current Israeli government is not convinced of this, and we must work to convey this idea to public opinion, in order to push towards the only solution we can imagine, in order to establish peace and security. Security for the two peoples fighting for the same land.
We will continue our discussion in the Foreign Affairs Council with our Arab partners and the Secretary-General of the Arab League. In the meantime, we must urge Israel to end the Rafah operation, as requested by the International Court of Justice. This is mandatory, and I hope that the international system can withstand this test. Because if this order of the International Court of Justice is not fulfilled and implemented, the entire multilateral system will be greatly weakened
He added, "On Sunday, we held an important meeting, called by the Norwegian Foreign Minister [Espen Barth Ede], to see how we can support the Palestinian Authority. We listened to the new Palestinian Authority Prime Minister [Muhammad Mustafa], who explained the reform plans. I think everyone was impressed by the deep reforms that he is planning." Prime Minister to implement it.
Also, everyone was concerned about the financial instability of the Palestinian Authority and, in particular, about the decision made by the Israeli government - the Netanyahu government - to stop giving the Palestinian Authority tax revenues to the Palestinian Authority. .
If so, there is a significant risk that financial instability [in the Palestinian Authority] will worsen, and no support plan can deal with it. No support plan can be a substitute for transferring taxes owned by the Palestinian Authority to the Palestinian Authority.
After that we had another meeting with people from all over the world. Not only from the Arab world, and not only from Europe, but from many countries that attended the Riyadh meeting a few weeks ago. Continue to discuss how we can look for a political solution, not just on humanitarian support, not just on the release of hostages - which is certainly the highest priority and the most urgent things to achieve - but how can that be achieved? We are looking for a political solution to the conflict. This can only be based on the basis of a Palestinian state.
And this is what we discussed, as I said, with many countries around the world – more than 20 [countries] to come – to continue the discussion that the Saudis started in Riyadh.
In response to a question about Borrell’s meeting with the Egyptian Foreign Minister [Sameh Shoukry] in a bilateral meeting. Did he talk to you about the appropriate time for the European Union to recognize the Palestinian state? Did you talk about the decision of the International Court of Justice? How unified is the EU on this topic?
He replied, "The European Union does not have the ability to recognize or not recognize [the country]. This is a national prerogative, and member states must make their own sovereign decision. Some have already done so - Spain and Ireland [recently] - I know others are thinking about it. I just want to To say that recognition of the Palestinian state is neither a gift to Hamas nor support for terrorism is completely ridiculous to claim that this decision was taken by two members of the European Union - the others do not share this decision, and will not, perhaps not tomorrow, this decision taken by these member states that. Recognizing the State of Palestine cannot be considered an anti-Semitic approach, nor can it be considered a gift to Hamas. The same goes for the court’s ruling - it is the court that interprets laws and makes decisions in accordance with international law, and it has nothing to do with the moral position or anti-Semitic positions .
The meeting of international partners on Palestine was held at the ministerial level on Sunday, May 26, 2024, in Brussels.
The meeting was chaired by Espen Barth Ede, Norwegian Foreign Minister and hosted by Josep Borrell and brought together representatives of major donors, as well as the United Nations and other international organizations, along with Palestinian Prime Minister Muhammad Mustafa.
This ministerial meeting was an opportunity to exchange information on the plans and priorities of the Palestinian Authority, and to discuss how the international community can best support the new government’s reform agenda, as well as strengthen Palestinian institutions and capacities.
