European Statement on Human Rights Day: Together we face increasing pressures from disinformation and the erosion of democracy to discrimination, inequality, and the devastating consequences of war in many parts of the world.

Brussels: Europe and the Arabs

On the occasion of Human Rights Day, a European statement was issued in Brussels by the office of Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. The statement read:

Every morning around the world, millions of small, unseen acts uphold human dignity. A girl walks to school with confidence because her community protects her; a student continues their education despite discouragement or denial; a survivor speaks out against violence and finds support; a journalist risks their life to report the truth. These are not just grand gestures, but everyday choices, often made in the face of fear or uncertainty. These everyday choices collectively reinforce our shared commitment to human rights.

Human rights are not merely legal obligations enshrined in international agreements; they are a lived experience, often challenged in the routines of daily life: in classrooms, workplaces, public services, and online spaces. They protect how we express ourselves, worship, organize, love, and participate in our communities every day. They are a right for everyone, everywhere.

Together, we face mounting pressures, from disinformation and the erosion of democracy to discrimination, inequality, and the devastating consequences of war. In many parts of the world, particularly in Ukraine and other countries in the European Neighbourhood, millions of civilians are struggling to survive in the face of aggression.

In these moments, the promise of “everyday human rights” becomes even more vital. It reminds us that rights are not self-sustaining; they require constant attention, courage, solidarity, and support. Upholding human rights is an obligation for all states, enabling each of us to exercise them through the actions we take, the decisions we make, and the respect we show to others.

On this Human Rights Day, the European Union remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting human rights at home and abroad, and to ensuring peace, truth, justice, and accountability. It reiterates its unwavering support for the United Nations, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and all its partners around the world in urging all states to respect and fulfill their human rights obligations. This year also marks the 25th anniversary of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.

Today we celebrate the countless individuals whose everyday actions embody these rights. Their stories remind us that progress isn't confined to courtrooms or parliaments; it's achieved when ordinary people choose compassion over indifference, fairness over self-interest, courage over silence, and dignity over division.

Let us cherish the universal rights that protect us, and let us defend the rights that protect others. Let us continue to build a world where human rights are practiced daily by everyone.
