Brussels: Europe and the Arabs
A statement was issued in Brussels by the office of Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The EU official stated, “Racial equality is not an aspiration reserved for any one group, but a right guaranteed to all. The nations of the world agreed on this simple principle when they adopted the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. However, six decades later, this promise remains elusive.”
In recent years, the European Union has intensified its efforts to combat racism. The EU Action Plan against Racism (2020-2025) and the first-ever Anti-Racism Strategy (2026-2030) represent a crucial shift from mere commitment to the implementation of targeted measures to address racism in all its forms, including structural racism. The Anti-Racism Strategy calls for the enforcement of anti-discrimination legislation, increased support for victims, steps to promote inclusive societies, and enhanced cooperation between EU Member States, civil society, and international partners. The EU also recognizes the continued importance of education and historical knowledge in addressing the root causes of racism. To eradicate racism and prevent its recurrence.
In parallel, the European Union contributes to international efforts to combat racism, including the implementation of global initiatives such as the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action. The EU also helps ensure that combating racism remains a global priority by regularly raising the issue with international partners, both through human rights dialogues and as part of ministerial meetings and summits. However, we look forward to effective follow-up mechanisms to monitor progress and the impact of global efforts, particularly through deeper cooperation with relevant UN and Council of Europe bodies.
Equality must not only be declared but also achieved. Today, on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, we call for the full and effective implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. Fulfilling the promise we collectively made 60 years ago means fostering an environment where everyone can thrive and contribute to the prosperity of society, without fear of racism or discrimination based on their racial or ethnic origin.
