UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric expressed grave concern over the ongoing suffering of civilians amid escalating violence, particularly in the Darfur and Kordofan regions of Sudan, according to the UN daily news bulletin, a copy of which was received Tuesday morning.
At the daily press briefing, Dujarric stated that in North Darfur, drone strikes on January 3 reportedly caused civilian casualties in the villages of Al-Zarq and Ghurair, including the targeting of a market and a medical clinic.
He added that on the same day, in West Darfur, one civilian was reportedly killed in two drone attacks in the Kulbus locality. Humanitarian partners reported that the strikes in Kulbus displaced more than 600 people.
The UN spokesperson also stated that in South Kordofan, multiple drone attacks between January 1 and 3 in Dilling resulted in civilian casualties. He added: “The situation in the city remains dire, with civilians trapped and the humanitarian situation continuing to deteriorate as access to essential supplies becomes increasingly restricted.”
Dujarric reiterated the call for the protection of civilians and for unimpeded humanitarian access to all affected areas.
He stressed that “the continued and regular delivery of humanitarian aid is essential to providing life-saving assistance and preventing further deterioration of the humanitarian situation.”
